Hallo, Karin,
It is great to learn another language, as -in my personal experience - by doing so you will get to know a "new" self!
With regards to German, it is not an easy langage to learn, but if you bring enthousiasm, an open mind, commitment and patience to the table, it can be fun and very educational.
Here are just a few points to know about German which are unique:
German is logical, but challenging: The grammar has rules—but also exceptions. Cases (nominative, accusative, dative, genitive), gendered nouns, and sentence structure may feel unfamiliar at first, especially if English is your first language.
Pronunciation matters: German has sounds not found in English (like “ü” or the “ch” in ich). It may take time to train your ear and tongue, but consistent practice helps.
Vocabulary builds through patterns: Many words are compound and descriptive (e.g., Handschuh = “hand shoe” = glove). Once you recognize patterns, vocabulary becomes more intuitive.
Overall, I always like to also talk about the people, customs, food, etc, and thus share with my students the culture, bringing them there.
GOOD LUCK
Angelika
