Question

The area of a rectangle is
63 m2
, and the length of the rectangle is
11 m
more than double the width. Find the dimensions of the rectangle.

We know A = w*h

 

Let x = the width

Therefore 2x+11(11 more than 2*the width) = the height

 

A = W * H

63 = x(2x+11)

63 = 2x^2 + 11x

Set to zero to solve

2x^2 + 11x-63 = 0

Factor

(2x-7)(x+9) = 0

Solve for each factor equaling 0

2x-7 = 0; x+9 = 0

So x = 3.5 or -9 but a length cannot be negative so x = 3.5 should the correct answer and lets check

 

63 = 3.5 * (2 * 3.5 + 11) = 3.5 * (7 + 11) = 3.5 * 18 = 63 so we are correct.
