Question

Petrolyn motor oil is a combination of natural oil and synthetic oil. It contains 8 liters of natural oil for every 5 liters of synthetic oil. In order to make 962 liters of Petrolyn oil, how many liters of natural oil are needed?

 

Please help me by showing me how to break down the problem for future reference.

If we have 8 parts of something for every 5 parts of something else, then we have 13 total parts, right?

 

962 / 13 = 74

 

Each of those parts of 13 has 8 liters of natural oil and 5 liters of synthetic.

 

74 x 8 = 592

 

Another way to do this is to set a proportion. Let x = the number of liters of natural oil needed.

 

8/x = 13/962

13x = 7696

   x = 592
