Answer in fraction form:: y = -(3/2)x + 7/2
Answer in decimal form: y = -1.5x + 3.5
Procedure:
Step One: Find slope m = (y2 - y1) / (x2 - x1) = (5 - 2) /((-1) - 1) = 3/(-2) = -(3/2)
Step Two: Solve for the y-intercept (b) this way:
Plug the calculated slope (m) and one point's (x,y) coordinate set into the equation y = mx + b to find the y-intercept (b). I choose (1,2) because they are non-negative numbers.
y = mx + b is 2 = (-(3/2))(1) + b
So 2 = -(3/2) + b
Add 3/2 to both sides of the equation to isolate (b).
b = 2 + 3/2 = 4/2 + 3/2 = 7/2 = 3.5
