How many blue and white tile was needed?

Half the 12-inch by 12-inch tiles were blue and half were white. How many of each color were needed to cover the 60 by 70 foot floor?

Paula, first get the area of the floor. If the dimensions are 60 by 70, and area = length x width, our area is

 

70 x 60 = 4200 square feet.

 

A 12-inch by 12-inch tile is 1 square foot, right? Because 12 inches is 1 foot, and 1 foot x 1 foot = 1 square foot.

 

So if each tile is a square foot, and your floor is 4200 square feet, you need 4200 tiles.

 

Half the tiles are blue and half white. Half of 4200 is .. .
