What is the distance?

The auditorium is 16 inches away from the town hall.  If the scale factor of the map is 1/2 inch =  miles, what is the true distance between the two buildings?

First of all, let's look at the info we have.

We know that the auditorium is 16 inches from the town hall as seen on the map.

We know that the map scale shows that 1/2 inch equals I mile.

 

So we set up the problem this way:

 

16 inches x 1 mile per.5 inches =

 

the inches units cancel each other out and we get miles by dividing 16 by .5

16 inches x 1 mile/.5 inches = 16miles/.5 solve and you will have your answer
