Lilly and Ansley are sisters;they want to buy their dad something special for his birthday.The total cost of what they want to buy is $61.Ansley will pay $5 less than twice as much as Lilly.How much will each sister have to pay to give the gift?

L + A = 61       eq. 1

 

A = 2L - 5        eq. 2

 

substitute eq. 2 to eq. 1

 

L + 2L - 5 = 61

 

3L = 61 + 5 = 66
