Let x = the smaller number and then describe the larger number in terms of x

 

so

 

larger number is 3 times the smaller plus 15

 

3x + 15 = larger (this says 3 times the smaller plus 15)

 

now add them together

 

x + 3x + 15 = 63

 

4x + 15 = 63

 

4x = 48

 

x = 12  (smaller number)

 

3x + 15 

 

3(12) + 15

 

36 + 15

 

51 (larger number)

 

12 + 51 = 63  (it checks out)
