what is the function value of x when y = 3?

You didn't tell us what the function is in the problem, so I'll pick an example:

 

y = 5x - 7

 

Now let's set y = 3:

 

3 = 5x - 7

 

Solve for x:

 

10 = 5x

 

2 = x

 

So for this function example, x=2 when y=3.
