Are there are functions that have one or three imaginary solutions?

Of course!

However, if you are speaking of polynomial equations with REAL coefficients, then complex roots occur in complex conjugate pairs

P.S. Please don't ask me, off the top of my head, to give you an example of an equation which has complex roots which are not in conjugate pairs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
