A landscape supplier buys 2 tonnes of fertiliser and fills an equal number of plastic bags (different sizes weighing differently) for resale. How many bags of each size will he have if:

a) he fills 2 kg bags only?

b) he fills 2 kg and 3 kg bags?

c) he fills 2 kg, 3 kg and 5 kg bags?

d) he fills 2 kg, 3 kg, 5 kg and 10 kg bags?

Answer 1

I assume this is metric tons where 1 metric ton = 1000kg.

a) he fills 2 kg bags only?

2 ton x 1000kg/1 ton x 1 bag/2kg = 1000 bags

b) he fills 2 kg and 3 kg bags?

2x + 3x = 5x

2000 kg = 5x

x = 400

400 bags x 2kg = 800 kg

400 bags x 3 kg = 1200 kg

800 kg + 1200kg = 2000 kg

Proceed in like fashion to solve c) and d)
