Hello,
Diabetics are more susceptible to infection, due to the high amount of plaque build up in their arteries. This plaque build up leads to a constricted blood supply. When you get a wound, normally the body would heal that wound, but in diabetics it can take longer. In terms of picking at skin, if you are a diabetic you are at increased risk of infection due to poor blood flow to your wound. This is because when you have diabetes, the nerves that help with blood flow are damaged, and that means that the wound will stay open longer. Open wounds are more susceptible to infection such as staph aureus.
