Let the 2 numbers = x and y

The sum of 2 numbers is 48. This gives Eq 1) x + y = 48

The difference of the the same 2 numbers is 26. This gives Eq 2) x - y = 26

Add both equations together, you get

x + y = 48

x - y = 26

2x = 74

x = 74 / 2 = 37

Substitute x = 37 into Eq 1), you get

x + y = 48

37 + y = 48

y = 11

To confirm,

x + y = 48

37 + 11 = 48!

x - y = 26

37 - 11 = 26!
