Law firms in Algebra 2? This is madness!!

Question

A copy machine was purchased by a law firm for 8000 and is assumed to have depreciated value of $0 after 5 years the firm take straight line depreciation over the five years.

1. Whats the linear equation?

My issue with this question is I understand it but have no clue to begin or how to set up the equation! I feel as if there is so much going on in my head/ ways to slove it that I'm not sure where to start or what would be the best way and why
