What are these letters doing in my equations? Here comes algebra!
Hi Paula--
What do you notice about "140 pounds" and "14 pounds"?
The first number is 10 times the second. So you know that the amount of milk is always 10 times the amount of cheese you'll get.
So if you want 11 ounces of cheese, you'll need 10 times that amount of milk-- 11 ounces x 10 = 110 ounces of milk.
For an equation you could say that:
m = 10c
("the number of ounces of milk m is equal to 10 times the number of ounces of cheese c.")
("the number of ounces of milk m is equal to 10 times the number of ounces of cheese c.")
Hope this is helpful!
Matt
