Let s = number of shirts bought
Let t = number of trousers bought
He bought 9 items:
s + t = 9 {equation 1}
Total price is 357
35s + 49t = 357 {equation 2}
In equation 1 solve for one variable in terms of the other:
t = 9 - s
Substitute that into equation 2
35s + 49(9-s) = 357
35s + 441 - 49s = 357
-14s = 357 - 441
-14s = -84
s = (-84)/(-14)
s = 6 shirts
t = 9-6 = 3 trousers
