The length of a rectangle is
3 ft
less than twice the width, and the area of the rectangle is
44 ft2
. Find the dimensions of the rectangle.

5.5 ft and 8ft

 

L = 2w - 3   W = W

 

L * W = (2w -3) (W) = 44

 

2w2 -3w -44 = 0

(2w - 11) (w + 4) = 0

 

Since all measure must be positive, 2w -11 is the only choice.  W = 5.5 ft

L = 2 (5.5) -3 = 8  L = 8ft.

 

Let's check it.  5.5 * 8 = 44 !  It does check out
