Okay, so she used 1/4 bag of sugar the first day. 

The 2nd day she used 1/2 of that amount. So, 

1/2 of 1/4 of a bag is:

1/2 x 1/4 = 1/8 of a bag.

 

So, in total, she used:

1/4 the first day and 1/8 the second day.

1/4 + 1/8 =  2/8 + 1/8 = 3/8 of a bag of sugar altogether.
