Here's a different approach to the problem.

So far the bowler has 198 and 185 and wants to achieve a 200 average.

The 198 is 2 points shy of 200 (-2).

The 185 is 15 points shy of 200 (-15).

The bowler needs to make up 2 points from the 198 and 15 points from the 185.

The bowler needs to get 217 points on the last game; 200 for his average and the 17 points (2+15) that he is already short !

The set up for this problem will be

 

[198+ 185+ x]/3 = 200                              X is the score on the third grade.  You divide by three because  

                                                                 when you find an average you add all your scores and divide by how

                                                                 many scores you added.

 

198+185+x= 600                                      Multiply both sides by 3

    383+x= 600                                          Combining like terms

   -383       -383                                         Subtracting 383 from both sides.

           x= 217

 

So, the bowler must get 217 on the third game for his/her average to be 200.
