One square has a perimeter of 40 in. A second square has a perimeter of 36 in. What is the posistive difference in the aras of the 2 squares?

L₁ = 40/4 in = 10 in

 

L₂ = 36/4 in = 9 in

 

A₁ - A₂ = L₁² - L₂² = (10² - 9²) in² = ? in²

So since a square has 4 equal sides, the area of the 1st square is 100 in² . (P = 40 = 4x. ,   x = 10  each side is 10 in)

 

A = 10 x 10 = 100 sq. in.

The 2nd square P = 36 = 4y.  y = 9 in

A = 9 x 9 = 81 sq.in

 

The positive difference is 100 - 81 = 19 sq.in.
