Question

Suppose the average yearly salary of an individual whose final degree is a master's is $37 thousand less than twice that of an individual whose final degree is a bachelor's. Combined, two people with each of these educational attainments earn $113 thousand. Find the average yearly salary of an individual with each of these final degrees.

m = 2b - 37

m + b = 113

 

Substitute!

 

2b - 37 + b = 113

3b = 150

b = 50 thousand

 

m = 2(50) - 37 = 100 - 37 = 63 thousand
