Chontra, you simply want y on one side by itself.  You are not going to come up with a number for an answer.   Let me give you an example.

 

Solve for y:  =2x + y = 72

 

Since you want the y by itself, you subtract 2x from both sides, so you end up with:

 

2x + y -2x = 72 - 2x

 

2x - 2x = 0, right, so you have y = 72 - 2x.

 

We always put the variables first, so your answer is y = -2x + 72.
