How many pounds of chocolate costing $11.00 per pound should be mixed with 19 pounds of trail mix costing $3.50 per pound to create a mixture worth $6.40 per pound. Let x = # of pounds of chocolate to be added.  Let y = total number of pound of the mixture.

 

y = 19 + x

 

19(3.50) + x(11) = y(6.40)

 

Substitute:

 

19(3.50) + x(11) = (19+ x)(6.40)

 

Simplify:

66.50 +11x = 121.60 + 6.40x

 

4.60x = 55.10

 

x = 11.98 = number of pounds of chocolate dded.
