Zach invests $7300 in two different accounts. The first account paid 9%, the second account paid 2% in interest. At the end of the first year he had earned $552 in interest. How much was in each account?  $____ at 9% $_____ at 2%

Let x = amount invested at 9%

 

Then, 7300 - x = amount invested at 2%

 

0.09x + 0.02(7300 - x) = 552

 

0.07x + 146 = 552

 

         0.07x = 406

 

               x = $5800

 

$5800 is invested at 9% and the rest ($1500) is invested at 2%

Let x be the amount invested in one account and let y be the amount invested in the other account.

 

x + y = 7300, so, x = 7300 - y

 

.09x + .02y = 552

 

Substitute:

.09(7300 - y) + .02y = 552

657 - .09y + .02y = 552

-.07y = -105

y = 1500 at 2%, x = 5800 at 9%
