how do i explain this to my 9 year old where we can all understand on how to get the answer without algebra because they don't even teach carrying the number in addition and without guessing a bunch of numbers

I have never taught elementary math; so, I am not sure what they know at 9 years old. Maybe try this:
Write down all the numbers that have a sum of 13.
12 + 1
11 + 2
10 + 3
9 + 4
8 + 5
7 + 6
Now subtract them
12 - 1 = 11
11 - 2 = 9
10 - 3 = 7 Voila!
