Mark is right on with his solution. I just want to show you that patterns exist in mathematics. If you recognize them it can make your work a lot easier. However, remember that you must show your work for your teacher.
1/2 + 1/4 + 1/8 + 1/16 + + 1/512=?
1/2 + 1/4=3/4
1/2 + 1/4 + 1/8=7/8
1/2 + 1/4 + 1/8 + 1/16=15/16
Do you see the pattern ?
Can you find the answer looking at the pattern ?

Hi Mark, I know it is not the way a high school student would do the problem but I used to give this problem to my seventh graders when I was a teacher and I just wanted to point out that patterns exist throughout mathematics and if the student ever got stuck on a problem like this it would be nice to know about patterns and thus be able to solve the problem. Also, knowing the answer using this method, the student could check his or her work after getting the answer using the formula.
Also, Mark, seeing that you mentioned "number sense", in MA students had the most problems with number sense on the MCAS test that they had to take in the eighth grade. Anyway, thanks for your opinion and have a nice day.
