Question

I have a 64% in my math class and my final exam is the last 10% of my grade, what grade do I need to get on my test to get a 70% in my class? All I need is C in my class to pass.

Let x be the final exam grade you need to get a 70% in your class.  Your final counts 10% (0.10) of your grade so the 64% counts as 90% (0.9) of your grade.  The weighted average is:

 

(0.9)(64%) + (0.1)x = 70%

 

Solve for x.  If x > 100%, you're scr**ed.
