A theater wants to build movable steps. The measurements are 12 in, 16 in, 20 in, 8 in, and 6 in. How much space is inside the steps?

Make a diagram (side view) and label the various horizontal distances. Now you can ask yourself how high is each step; with that information, which you do not seem to possess, you can calculate the area of the side view.
 
The question is asking for SPACE, which might imply that volume is desired, in which case you would need even more data, because this would be a 3D question.
