How many tickets sold at full price? How many at discount?

Jan sold tickets for the fundraiser play. She sold a total of 180 tickets, some at full price of $7 and some at discount rate of $5. If she took in a total of $1140, how many of each ticket did she sell?

 

(note: could someone also write the equation to solve this?)

X +Y = 180 ---> Y = 180 - x

 

7x + 5Y = 1140

 

 

7x + 5(180 - x) = 1140

 

7x + 900 - 5x = 1140

 

2x + 900 = 1140

 

2x = 240

 

x=120

120x 7 + 60x 5 = 840 + 300 = 1140, so yes it works!
