The sum of two numbers is 31. The sum of the smaller and 7 times the larger is 193. Find the numbers

I have no idea what the answer is. Im in mte 5 and this is 5.10 applications.

n = the smaller number

m = the larger number

 

n + m = 31

n + 7m = 193

 

Solve for n and m.  Subtract bottom equation from top equation and get

 

-6m = -162

m = 162/6 = 27

 

Plug the result for m into top equation and get

 

n + 27 = 31

n = 31 - 27 = 4
