3x2 + 5x+2 =24
3x2 +5x -22 = 0
(3x + 11)(x - 2) = 0
The negative answer is extraneous; ignore it.

Mary's right...you should have included the modifier RECTANGULAR for the table top.
L & W being given suggests a rectangle, so in this case Area = (3x+2)(x+1) = 24.
The solution to this equation will be x=2.
