Katie went canoeing down the Waxahachie River. She started at 8:00 a.m. and moved at a rate of 12 miles per hour. Her friend Adam began canoeing at 10:00 a.m., moving at a rate of 17 miles per hour. At what time did Adam catch up to Katie?

To meet, they'd both have to go the same distance. d = rt, and Adam travels for 2 fewer hours than Katie.

 

12t = 17(t - 2)

 

Solve for t, then add to 8:00.
