carlos is a carpenter . for an hour of work he charges 1$ less then 4 times as much as his assistant rosie. for 8 hours day they charge 232$ not including material. how much does each of them make an 1 hour

Let R represent Rosie's rate and C Carlos'. By the second sentence:

C = 4R - 1

By the third sentence

8C + 8R = 232

Substituting we get

8(4R-1) + 8R = 232 => 32R - 8 + 8R = 232 => 40R = 240 => R = 6

So Rosie makes $6 hourly and Carlos makes (6*4) - 1 or $23 hourly.
