Let n = number of nickels

Let q = number of quarters

 

n = q + 2

5n + 25q = 130

 

Use substitution: replace n with q+2 in 2nd equation and solve for q

 

5(q+2) + 25q = 130

5q + 10 + 25q = 130

30q + 10 = 130

30q = 120

q = 4 quarters

 

n = q+2 = 6 nickels

 

4(25) + 6(5) = 100 + 30 = 130 cents
