Why would something like hydrogen gas be considered a molecule but not a compound

This is a 10th grade highschool question. I cannot find it in my book or notes

Hydrogen most commonly appears in pairs of atoms, symbolically H₂.

 

Compounds are made up of different elements but here we have two atoms of the same element.
