One number is 25 more than another number. The sum of the numbers is 47. Find the numbers.

Say one number is X and the other is Y.

Your problem says  one number (X) is (=) 25 more (+) than another number (Y), or X = 25 + Y

 

But you also know that the sum of the two numbers is 47,or X + Y = 47.

Since X = 25 + Y, you can sub that in equation 2 to get ....   25 + Y + Y = 47  .

Solve this to get 2Y = 47-25 or 2Y = 22, Y = 11   That makes X = 36:)
