One month bill rented 5 movies and 3 video games for a total of $34. The next month he rented 2 movies and 12 video games for a total of $79. Find the cost of each movie and video game.

2m + 12v = 79

 

We have two equations with two unknowns.  The system can be solved

by substitution or elimination.  Let's eliminate the variable m so we can

solve for the variable v.

Multiply equation 1 by 2 and equation 2 by -5 and add the results.

 

10m + 6v = 68

-10m - 60v = -395

       -54v = -327

        v = $6.06

 

Substitute back into one of the original equations and solve for m.

 

5m + 3v = 34

5m + 3(6.06) = 34

5m + 18.18 = 34

5m = 15.82

m = $3.16

and even dollar and cent amount.

Movies rent for $3.16 and video games rent for $6.06
