2m^3 of soil containing 35% sand was mixed into 6m^3 of soil containing 15% sand. What is the sand content of the mixture?

35% of 2 m³

0.35(2) = 0.7 m³ sand

 

15% of 6 m³

0.15(6) = 0.9 m³ sand

 

0.7 + 0.9 = 1.6 m³ of sand in 8 m³

1.6 = (x/100)(8)

 

x = 1.6(100)/8 = 0.2(100) = 20% sand
