A total of 565 tickets were sold for the school play. They were either adult tickets or student tickets. There were 65 more student tickets sold than adult tickets. How many adult tickets were sold?

y= student tickets sold

 

x + y = 565

65 more student tickets sold than adult tickets: y = x + 65

plug that into first equation

x + (x+65) = 565
