There are several ways to set up the equation.
I do it like this.
let x = number of hours they work together.
the part of the total job Suzy completes in x hours is x/3
the part of the total job Ralf completes in x hours is x/5
the total job = 1
therefore x/3 + x/5 = 1
5x/15 + 3x/15 = 1
8x/15 = 1
x = 15/8 hours = 1 7/8 hours
Suzy completes 5/8
Ralf completes 3/8
and the sum of the fractions is 1.
