If a production line ran for 20 minutes at 75% of capacity and 40 minutes at 53%, what is the efficiency of the line for 60 minutes?

This is a "weighted average" calculation.  Let E = the average production capacity for the hour (efficiency).  Since the production line ran at 75% for 20/60 = 1/3 of the hour, 75% is weighted at 1/3.  Since the line ran at 53% for the remaining 40/60=2/3 of the hour, 53% is weighted at 2/3:

 

E = (1/3)(75%) + (2/3)(53%)

E = 25% + 35¹/₃%

 

E = 60¹/₃% of capacity for the hour
