let  x  be the number of nickels, y - quarters (1 nickel=5 cents 1 quarter =25 cents). Then

x+y=34 <--(Total numbers of coins)

5x+25y=410 <--(Total amount of all  coins)

Now you have to solve this linear system of two equations. I think you can do that.

Let q = number of quarters

 

n + q = 34

 

0.05n + 0.25q = 4.10

Let's multiply by 100 to clear decimals

5n + 25q = 410

We can also factor a 5 out of both sides

5(n + 5q) = 5(82)

n + 5q = 82

 

We have two equations:

 

  n + 5q = 82

-(n + q  = 34)    Subtract from the other equation to eliminate n

        4q = 48

         q = 12  quarters

 

n + 12 = 34

n = 22 nickels

 

Jeremy has 22 nickels and 12 quarters

 

Check:  0.05(22) + .25(12) = 4.10

            1.10 + 3 = 4.10

            4.10 = 4.10
