Hi Sarah,
Word problems can tend to be intimidating but always remember you are given everything you need to resolve the problem (in most cases). In other cases you are given just enough information to seek other information to help you resolve the problem. Finally, there are times when you are given too much information and some of that information is not needed in order to resolve your problem.
In your problem, you are given everything you need.
An equation will assist:
$72.00 + 10%(70.00) = Total earned.
$72.00 + $7.00 = $79.00 total earnings for last week.
Please notice you are taking the product of 10% and $70.00 in order to arrive at $7.00
Does this makes sense? Ask yourself what would the total earnings be if Dale sold $100.00 worth of merchandise. Can you provide me the answer to that question?
I hope this helped you and wish you a great day tomorrow.
