Word Problems

Jesse's car gets 30 miles per gallon of gas.
(a) If Las Vegas is 255 miles away, how many gallons of gas are needed to get there and then home?
(b)If gas is $3.03 per gallon, what is the total cost (in dollars) of the gas for the trip?

how do i solve this question?

Michael P.

a) Let x = gallons of gas needed

(30 mile/gal)*x = 255 miles*2      (multiple the distance one way by 2 to obtain round trip distance)

therefore, x = 2*255 miles/(30 miles/gal) = 17 gallons

b) Total Cost of trip = ($3.03/gal)*17 gal = $51.51
