Tim was given $15 to spend on snacks and reading material.  Granola bars cost $1.15 each and magazines cost $1.25.  If Tim buys the same number of granola bars and magazines what is the agelebraic equation to solve for how many he can buy?

if the same number, then

each pair of granola bar and magazine would cost $1.15+$1.25=$2.40

Equation you have to solve is

2.40*x=15.

If both values are the same, we need only one variable.

 

1.15x + 1.25x ≤ 15

2.4x ≤ 15

x ≤ 6.25

 

Since you can't buy 1/4 of either, he has enough money to buy 6 of each.
