Tickets to the performance were $20 for an adult and $10 for a child. The total amount of the ticket sales was $2500. There were twice as many adult tickets sold as there were child tickets. How many adult tickets were sold?

First choose variables for the unknowns, number of adult and child tickets:

 

a = number of adult tickets

c = number of child tickets

 

20a + 10c = 2500

a = 2c

 

20(2c) + 10c = 2500

40c + 10c = 2500

50c = 2500

c = 50 child tickets

 

a = 2c = 100 adult tickets
