The length of a rectangular flower bed is 11 ft. less than 3 times its width. The area of the bed is 20 ft². Find the dimensions of the flower bed.

How do i solve this problem step by step?

w(3w - 11) = 20

3w² - 11w -20 = 0

(3w + 4)(w - 5) = 0

 

In order for two factors to have a product of 0, one or both has to be equal to 0.

 

3w + 4 = 0

3w = -4

w = -4/3

We don't measure using negative numbers, so this answer is out!

 

w - 5 = 0

w = 5

 

3(5) - 11 = 4

 

The flower bed is 4 ft x 5 ft.
