why not get smart and realize that, with effort, you can learn.
i am willing to bet that problems of this kind are in your textbook, which you should read carefully, more than once, until what you are reading makes sense. you have the right to ask question in class so that the teacher can help you over the occasional hurdle. you should participate in a peer group. in these ways, you should be able to shed a lot of negativity and come out of this as a better person and student.
in general, i recommend that you draw the figure in question, whenever applicable. label the width w and the length w+4, per the wording. area = w(w+4) = 23.
you now have a quadratic equation: w2 +4w - 23 = 0. it cannot be factored, so you will have to use the quadratic formula. carry on.
