There are 23 students in a class. 11 of them play volleyball, 10 of them play tennis and 4 of them don’t play any of the sports. How many students play both volleyball and tennis?

Let x be the number of students that play both.

 

Then:

  Volleyball only is 11-x

  Tennis only is 10-x

 

11-x + x + 10-x +4 = 23

 

25 - x = 23

 

-x = 23 - 25

 

-x = -2

 

x=2

 

9 play volleyball only

8 play tennis only

2 play both tennis and volleyball

4 play neither
