A rancher has 444 feet of fencing to enclose two adjacent rectangular corrals. The wall separating the two corrals consists of a single fence between them. What dimensions for one of the individual corrals will produce the largest total area? What is the maximum arena for the two corrals combines?

Have you made a drawing (plan view) and labeled each of the three equal sides x,

and the other side // to the wall (444-3x)?

 

Now write the expression for area. It will be a quadratic--a parabola opening downardly.

The maximum of this function occurs at the vertex where x = -b/(2a).

 

So the maximum area is the y value of the area function at that particular x.
